WHAT TO EXPECT

studio pet photography session with two white poodlesAs a pet photographer, my mission at Artful Paws Photography is to capture a pet’s personality in a fun and creative style and to provide clients with beautiful images that they will treasure for life. I offer a variety of session options for dog photography, pet photography or family photography. These include either a studio, outdoor or combination session at my home studio in Fairfax, Virginia or a session at the location of your choice. This could be in your home, yard or perhaps a favorite park. If you have something special in mind, let me know and we can create a custom session for you!

The first step in the process is to have a pre-session consultation. This can be done either in person or over the phone. For location sessions, or if your dog is fearful, I recommend we do this in person. During this time we will discuss your pet and other family members you want to include in the session. We will also discuss your desires and vision of your finished artwork and choose a time and place for your session.

When I arrive at the location of your choice, I will spend some time getting to know your pet and helping them to feel comfortable with me and my camera before going to work on your images. Be prepared to go slowly.  Pet photography takes a lot of patience!

Pomeranian resting during dog photography sessionBecause every pet is unique, every session is different. I do whatever it takes to capture the essence of your pet. You might find me rolling on the ground while your pet frolics around me or quietly sneaking up to capture a peaceful moment. While I work hard to fulfill the visions of my clients, I also find that it often works best to go with the flow of the animal. Many of my clients’ favorite images are captured from those moments when an animal is just doing what comes naturally and may be very different from the client’s original vision. My clients are welcome to participate at whatever level they choose, whether they want to be included in the photographs, help with getting the pet’s attention or just sit back and watch the show! All I ask is that you be patient. The best images are created when your animal is relaxed and comfortable!

Upon completing your session, we will schedule an ordering appointment, usually about 1-2 weeks after the session. During this time, you will view your professionally edited proofs. We will review the options for displaying your finished artwork and I will help you make design and product decisions. If you have a particular spot in your home where you would like to display your artwork, it is helpful to snap a picture of the space. Your finished portraits will be available for pickup approximately  2-4 weeks after your order is placed.
